Wide-Eyed Open

I would have missed this

You, baby bird
with your half-broken wing
you, with your tiny freckles
and eyes that plead
please, please love me
just the way I am

I would have missed this
if I had held back the gush
of love
in that one-of-a-kind moment
the one that will never
be again

wispy angel clouds
hand reaching for mine
breath full of new
I would have missed you

if I'd been bound
by what was "appropriate"
by whether they'd approve
by should or shouldn't haves
what ifs or hows
if I had been measuring
or grasping, wishing
I had
or hadn't
If I had been thinking
this moment needed
to be more
or less

I would have missed this
but I didn't, thank God
instead I was

right Here

wide-eyed open
heartfirst diving
into this sparkling
never ending
sea of
You

  2. My dear sister, you are such a sweet gift.

Staying in the now is a moment to moment practice, for sure, but whew! How very filling it is to stay--not run, not hide, not resist--just stay with whatever IS. The beauty is always right here.

I love you an absolute ton,

    Julia

And thank you for being there for me in such a present and generous way, recently, through my grieving.

  4. Thank you for sharing this breathless moment where love unites and fear is quenched. How many of these moments do we shy away from or talk over so that we can't hear them.
This was brilliant Julia. Thank you for sharing this precious gem.

    1. Yes, Leah-there are countless moments when I have turned and walked the other way or my thoughts have been so damn loud I can't hear or see a thing...I'm ready to be done with those moments, I'm really really ready.

I love that you're here, my friend. Thank you.

  5. thank you
    for reminding me
    to open my heart
    to the magic
    of
    this moment
    especially when i am trying
    to not let the busyness
    distract me from the beauty
    and love
    of my amazing girls

    thank you!

    1. Christy, I so appreciate your presence here.

I get exactly what you're saying...I don't want to miss any more moments with my precious little girls either. When I really truly slow down and am right there with them, my heart breaks a little--the love is so HUGE it washes over me...I know in these moments, there is absolutely nowhere else to be.

      Sending love your way,

      Julia

    1. Oh, Deb-you made my whole day. I'm smiling here, imagining me signing and sending you a copy hot off the press. I seriously can't wait until that day arrives. I feel all giddy inside just thinking about it.

      Still smiling...

  13. Wow, Julia. This is one of my favorite things you've ever, ever written. I love "breath full of new." And holy shit, woman. What a reminder to be present, to not miss the magic that unfolds before our eyes for all our imagining how the moment might be different, more, less.

    You are a gift. xox

  14. Ah, J. All this coming from you-the magician of words-you've filled my heart even fuller this morning. Thank you.

These words came to me the other day while I was walking on the beach...*every moment is a new opportunity to open to love*. Every moment is a breath full of new. We can always, always begin again.

    I love you, my friend.
